The verdict

Machynys Peninsula is the modern flagship of golf on the south Wales coast. Opened in 2005 as the first Jack Nicklaus design in Wales, it was built by Nicklaus Design, with Gary Nicklaus closely involved, on reclaimed land at the edge of Carmarthen Bay just outside Llanelli. The brief was a links style championship test with the open horizons of seaside golf, and the routing delivers wide views across the estuary to the Gower peninsula from almost every hole.

At 7,121 yards from the championship tees it has the length and the bite to test the best, and it has done so in tournament conditions, having hosted the Ladies' Championship of Europe. Yet for the visiting golfer it remains remarkably good value for a course of this standard. With a premier spa and clubhouse on site and a stretch of memorable water holes through the closing nine, Machynys is the natural centrepiece of a golf trip to Carmarthenshire and the wider south Wales coast.

The holes worth the trip

Machynys is built to look and play like links golf even though it is a modern creation on reclaimed ground. The fairways run firm in summer, the wind off Carmarthen Bay is a constant factor, and the bunkering and shaping carry the unmistakable Nicklaus stamp, generous landing areas off the tee giving way to demanding, well defended greens that put a premium on the approach.

The closing stretch is where the course shows its best. The 16th is the signature, a par 4 of about 451 yards played across a lake from beside the clubhouse, water all down one side and the green sitting hard against it, one of the most beautiful and nervy holes on the south Wales coast. The designers singled out the 4th, 5th, 16th and 18th as their favourites, and the run home around the water lives long in the memory.

What ties it together is the setting. With the estuary on one side and the hills of Gower across the bay, Machynys offers the kind of open, big sky golf that travelling players come to Wales for, and a test that flexes from a fair challenge off the forward tees to a full championship examination from the back.
