Stonewall Resort Golf Club
An Arnold Palmer Signature design that opened in 2002 along the shore of Stonewall Jackson Lake, this par 72 of about 7,149 yards is the centerpiece of one of West Virginia's most relaxing resort settings, set inside a state park in the rolling hills of the central highlands.

The verdict
The Arnold Palmer Signature Course at Stonewall Resort is the kind of layout that makes a golf trip feel like a holiday. Designed by Palmer and his long time partner Ed Seay and opened in 2002, it runs along and around Stonewall Jackson Lake inside a West Virginia state park, so water and woodland frame nearly every hole. At about 7,149 yards and par 72 it has enough length and shape to test a good player, while several forward tees keep it generous for the rest of the group.
For the traveling golfer it is a destination round rather than a bucket list pilgrimage, and that is its appeal. The lodge sits a short walk from the first tee, the lake views are constant, and the pace is unhurried. It pairs naturally with the state's bigger names for a West Virginia tour, and on its own it is a fine, scenic resort test that almost any group will enjoy.

The holes worth the trip
Palmer and Seay routed the course to make the most of the lake and the forested terrain. Several holes play toward or alongside the water, and the elevation changes through the state park give the round variety and some memorable downhill tee shots. The fairways are generous enough to encourage the driver, but the approaches ask for thought, with the lake and the woods punishing a loose miss.
The greens are well sized and fairly contoured, true to the Palmer philosophy of a fair test that rewards good ball striking without trickery. The closing stretch brings the lake back into play and gives the round a strong finish, with water and the resort backdrop framing the final holes.
It is a course that suits a mixed group: long enough to interest the low handicapper from the back tees, but playable and enjoyable from the middle markers for everyone else. The scenery does a lot of the work, and the result is one of the most pleasant resort rounds in the state.

Where to stay nearby
Stonewall is a self contained resort, so the easiest base is the on site lodge and the lakeside cottages, a short walk or shuttle from the first tee and set within the state park alongside the marina, spa and trails. It is built for a stay and play and works well for golf groups, couples and families alike.
For a wider West Virginia golf tour, pair Stonewall with the state's headline course at Pete Dye Golf Club to the north, the parkland test of Oglebay Resort Speidel Course, or the grand resort golf of The Greenbrier Old White course to the south.
