Sea Pines Atlantic Dunes
Davis Love III rebuilt Atlantic Dunes from the ground up and reopened it in 2017, a par 72 of about 7,010 yards on the site of Sea Pines' original George Cobb Ocean course. Sandy waste, native grasses and reshaped dunes earned it South Carolina Course of the Year.

The verdict
Atlantic Dunes is the newest of the three courses at The Sea Pines Resort, and the boldest. Davis Love III and his Love Golf Design team did not simply touch up the resort's original George Cobb layout, the first course built on Hilton Head back in 1961; they rebuilt it from the ground up, reshaping the land into sandy waste areas, native grasses and rolling dunes that feel a world away from the manicured island norm. It reopened in 2017 and was promptly named South Carolina Course of the Year.
Our verdict: this is the most distinctive resort round on Hilton Head, a course with real texture and movement that complements the famous Harbour Town links a short drive away. For a Sea Pines stay it is an essential play. For the wider region, see our guide to golf in South Carolina.

The holes worth the trip
What sets Atlantic Dunes apart is its variety. Love built width and options into the fairways, then defended the course with sandy waste, native grasses and greens that demand the right angle of approach. The land moves more than you expect on Hilton Head, and the routing makes the most of it, so the round feels open and strategic rather than tight and tree lined.
The closing stretch and the par 3s are the highlights, with green sites that reward a precise iron and punish a lazy one. As a Love design it shares the playable, shot maker friendly DNA of his best resort work, generous enough to enjoy and clever enough to keep a good player thinking. It is a refreshing change of pace from the lagoon and oak golf elsewhere on the island.
On a Hilton Head or wider lowcountry trip Atlantic Dunes pairs naturally with the island's other great courses and with the bold modern golf of Long Cove Club nearby, while a short drive toward Charleston brings the classic template golf of Yeamans Hall into range.

Where to stay nearby
Most visitors play Atlantic Dunes as part of a Sea Pines stay, where the lodging runs from the resort's hotel and villas to rental homes a short ride from the first tee. A Sea Pines package is the simplest way to combine Atlantic Dunes with the resort's famous Harbour Town links and Heron Point course in one trip.
Hilton Head rewards an unhurried itinerary across its many courses, so anchor a few nights on the island and let Atlantic Dunes be a highlight, then add the private drama of Long Cove Club if you can arrange access.
