Aldarra Golf Club
Tom Fazio designed Aldarra, opening in 2001 on the rolling former Boeing family estate at Sammamish, twenty miles east of Seattle. A private par 71 of about 6,885 yards running through forest, ferns and creek lines under Mount Si, it is the only Fazio course in Washington and one of the most admired members clubs in the Pacific Northwest.

The verdict
When Tom Fazio came to the Pacific Northwest at the turn of the millennium, he built only one course in Washington, and Aldarra is it. The site helped: the club sits on the old Aldarra Farms, the Boeing family country estate east of Seattle, a 525 acre spread of rolling pasture, second growth fir and tumbling creeks. Fazio routed a quiet, classical par 71 across it, letting the land rise and fall naturally and framing several holes against Mount Si and the Cascade foothills.
Our verdict: this is understated, beautifully built parkland golf that values shot making and shape over raw length. At about 6,885 yards it is not long by modern tournament standards, but the rating and slope near 74.0 and 147 tell you the test is in the angles, the tree lines and the firm, tilted greens. It is a private members retreat rather than a resort, so the round is calm, unhurried and immaculately kept. For the wider region, see our guide to golf in Washington State.

The holes worth the trip
Aldarra reads as old fashioned in the best sense. Fazio used the rolling ground to set up tee shots that ask for a preferred side, then defended the greens with subtle tilt and well placed bunkering rather than length or water. Find the correct angle off the tee and the approach opens up; bail out and you are left fighting the slope of the green from the wrong quarter.
The forest is the constant companion. Towering firs frame the corridors, narrowing the eye and demanding a committed line, while creeks and wetland edges catch the careless. The greens are the examination, firm and contoured, so the player who controls trajectory and spin and stays below the hole is rewarded, and the one who fires blindly at flags is not.
The closing stretch climbs and falls through the most dramatic terrain on the property, with Mount Si on the horizon, a fitting finish to a round that prizes thought over power. Pair a Seattle visit with the public drama of Chambers Bay and the fescue links of Gamble Sands for a full Washington itinerary.

Where to stay nearby
Aldarra has no lodging of its own, so most visitors base themselves on the Eastside around Bellevue and Issaquah, fifteen to twenty five minutes away, where modern hotels sit close to the I-90 and the wineries of Woodinville. Downtown Seattle, with its full range of hotels, restaurants and the waterfront, is around forty minutes by car.
Washington is built for a multi course road trip, so anchor a few nights near Seattle and add the public giants. Pair Aldarra, if a member can host you, with the tumbling sand of Chambers Bay south of Tacoma and the David McLay Kidd fescue of Gamble Sands in the north central high desert.
