The verdict

Al Zorah Golf Club opened in December 2015 as a Nicklaus Design layout on the coast of Ajman, the northernmost of the golf emirates, and it is unlike anything else in the country. The par 72 of 7,169 yards is routed through a living mangrove forest and a network of tidal lagoons whose water levels rise and fall through the day, with flamingos, pelicans and around two hundred species of bird sharing the property.

Our verdict: this is the most natural and the most peaceful golf in the UAE, a welcome change of pace from the manicured Dubai resorts. Managed by Troon, it conditions superbly, plays a touch firmer and quieter than the big city clubs, and tends to cost meaningfully less than its better known rivals. For a trip that wants character and value alongside the marquee names, Al Zorah is the standout addition.

Al Zorah was designed by Nicklaus Design and opened in December 2015, a par 72 of 7,169 yards from the black tees, managed by Troon. The holes worth the trip

The Nicklaus team draped the course over a tidal flat, so the mangroves and lagoons are not decoration but the hazard. Fairways are generous, but the water moves with the tide and the wind off the Gulf shapes every club selection, with one and a half kilometres of boardwalk linking holes across the wetland.

The signature moment is the par 5 ninth, played from a cluster of island tee boxes with a wall of mangroves running down the right for the length of the hole. It is a genuinely dramatic stage, and the run of holes around the lagoons gives the round a rhythm of risk and reward that rewards a straight ball.

Al Zorah closes back toward the clubhouse and marina, the firm greens asking for control of distance into the breeze. It plays best as a thinking player's course rather than a bomber's, and it gives back a calm, scenic round with wildlife at every turn, the kind of day that lingers long after a Dubai resort blurs.

Where to stay nearby

Most visiting golfers base themselves in Dubai, with its vast choice of beach resorts, city hotels and dining, then drive north to Al Zorah for the day. Ajman itself has a small cluster of waterfront resorts beside the marina for those who want to stay on the doorstep.

For a golf focused trip, a Dubai base puts Al Zorah, the Emirates clubs and the Abu Dhabi courses all within reach, while an Ajman stay trades the city buzz for a quieter beach setting. It pairs naturally with Yas Links, the Majlis at Emirates and Dubai Creek for a full UAE tour.
