The verdict

Enrique Canales Busquets routed Santa Clara to sit lightly on its site, keeping the native vegetation and the contours of the land east of Marbella. The result is a parkland course that is technically interesting without being punishing, with generous fairways, light rough and open greens that reward a tidy short game over raw power.

It will not claim a place among the marquee names of the western Costa del Sol, and it is the better for knowing what it is: a well kept, welcoming round close to Marbella town, ideal as part of a multi course week on the coast. With the beach, the old town and dozens of courses within a short drive, Santa Clara is an easy and rewarding addition to any Costa del Sol itinerary.

The holes worth the trip

Santa Clara plays at a manageable length, so it suits a wide range of handicaps, but the green complexes and the placement of the bunkering give the better player plenty to think about. Position off the tee opens up the best angles into greens that are more subtly defended than they first appear.

The course uses the gentle slope of the land toward the coast, with a handful of holes offering glimpses of the Mediterranean and the Marbella skyline. Water and well placed bunkers come into play on the scoring holes, where a careful approach pays off and a loose one is quickly punished.

It is golf to be enjoyed at pace in fine weather, a course that gives back a good score to the player who stays patient and plays within themselves. As a Costa del Sol round close to town, it is hard to fault on value and convenience.
