Real Club El Prat

Just inland from Barcelona, in a 280 hectare nature park above Terrassa, sits one of Spain's grand old clubs reborn as a modern championship venue. Founded in 1912 and granted royal status by King Alfonso XIII, El Prat moved to this site in 2004 with 45 holes shaped by Greg Norman. It has staged the Spanish Open ten times, and its interchangeable nines give you a different par 72 every visit.

The verdict

Real Club El Prat is the rare club that carries more than a century of history yet plays as a genuinely modern test. The original Prat de Llobregat course gave way in 2004 to a fresh Greg Norman complex above Terrassa, and the move lost none of the prestige. This is a ten time Spanish Open host, and the championship combination, drawn from the Abajo and Arriba nines, was the stage for the 2015 edition. The quality runs deep across all 45 holes.

For the travelling golfer it is the obvious centerpiece of a Barcelona golf trip. The club lies around 25 minutes from the city in a wooded hillside park, so you get serious, tour tested golf within easy reach of one of Europe's great cities. Norman routed the holes through Mediterranean pine on rolling ground, with generous landing areas off the tee giving way to demanding, well defended greens. Play it as a championship eighteen, then mix the nines for a second very different round.

Founding year, designer, layout and length verified June 2026: Real Club de Golf El Prat was founded in 1912, granted royal status by King Alfonso XIII, and relocated to its current Terrassa site in 2004 with 45 holes designed by Greg Norman across five nines. The holes worth the trip

El Prat is built to be reconfigured. The five nines, identified by color, pair into many different eighteen hole rounds, and the showpiece is the Open course, the combination of the lower Abajo nine and the upper Arriba nine that hosted the 2015 Spanish Open. It plays a true par 72 with four par 3s, ten par 4s and four par 5s, and it climbs and falls across the hillside in a way that keeps the challenge fresh from first tee to last.

Norman's signature shows in the framing. Wide, inviting fairways encourage you to open the shoulders off the tee, but the greens are the test, firm, contoured and ringed with bunkers that punish the lazy approach. The par 3s are strong and varied, asking for everything from a flighted mid iron to a full long iron into wind, and the par 5s tempt the bold with reachable second shots guarded by sand and slope.

The setting earns the trip on its own. Stone pines and Mediterranean scrub line the holes, the ground tilts toward the coastal plain, and on a clear day the views stretch toward Barcelona and the sea. It is mature, well conditioned golf with a tournament pedigree, close enough to the city that you can play in the morning and dine on the Ramblas at night.

Where to stay nearby

Most visitors base themselves in Barcelona, 25 minutes away, where the choice runs from design hotels in the Eixample to grand addresses on Passeig de Gracia. It is one of the few golf trips where the off course days are as compelling as the round, with Gaudi, the old town and the beach all on hand.

If you would rather stay closer to the golf, the towns of the Valles, including Terrassa and Sant Cugat, offer comfortable, quieter bases minutes from the first tee. Either way the Catalan coast adds more golf within an hour, so a long weekend can easily build into a full week.
