La Manga Club West Course

The West is the youngest and most strategic of La Manga Club's three courses, a Dave Thomas layout from 1991 that climbs and tumbles across more dramatic ground than its sisters. Tighter and more technical than the championship South, it asks for placement over power and is a firm favorite of the better player on a Murcia golf week.

The verdict

Where the South is the resort's tournament muscle and the North its gentler test, the West is the one that makes you think. Laid out by Dave Thomas and opened in 1991, it occupies the higher, more broken ground at La Manga, and the routing uses every contour. Dog legs, raised greens and well judged carries reward the player who plots a way around rather than simply hitting hard.

It is the shortest of the three at La Manga but rarely the easiest, and many returning golfers name it their favorite of the set. For a visiting group it completes the picture: three genuinely different rounds on one stay, which is exactly why La Manga remains a buddies trip and society staple. The holes worth the trip

The West rewards course management from the first tee. Thomas set greens into the slopes and angled fairways so that the smart line, often away from the obvious one, leaves the cleaner approach. Position off the tee matters more here than raw distance.

Elevation change is the signature. Several holes play uphill to perched greens or downhill to targets framed by bunkering, and judging the extra or missing club is half the examination. The greens are firm and contoured in the resort style, so the approach has to land in the right zone to hold.

It pairs naturally with the championship South Course and the more forgiving North Course for a three round stay that never repeats itself, the reason La Manga works so well for a group of mixed handicaps.

Where to stay nearby

La Manga Club is a self contained estate with a five star hotel, serviced apartments and villas, plus a tennis center, spa and a wide choice of restaurants, so most golfers stay on site and walk to the first tee. The beaches of the Mar Menor and the Roman port city of Cartagena are close for non golf days.

The natural golf week pairs the West with the championship South and the North for three contrasting rounds from a single base. The wider Murcia and Alicante coast adds modern resort courses within easy reach for groups wanting more variety.
