Golf del Sur

Golf del Sur is the long standing resort course of southern Tenerife, a 27 hole Pepe Gancedo layout from 1987 minutes from the airport at San Miguel de Abona. Three contrasting nines, the North, South and a reworked Links, are stitched together with the black volcanic sand bunkers that give the course its signature look and a tournament past to match.

The verdict

Golf del Sur is the dependable workhorse of southern Tenerife golf, and after nearly four decades it remains one of the easiest rounds in the Canaries to build a trip around. Pepe Gancedo laid out 27 holes here in 1987, and the Links nine was reworked by the Spanish tour player Manuel Pinero in 2005, giving a group plenty of variety across the North, South and Links loops without leaving the property.

The black volcanic sand in the bunkers is the visual signature and a genuine novelty for first time visitors, and the proximity to Tenerife South airport makes it the natural first or last round of a holiday. It is a value, sociable course rather than a championship marquee, and as part of a southern week it earns its keep. See our best of Spain ranking and the golf in Spain guide for context.

The holes worth the trip

The defining feature at Golf del Sur is underfoot and in the bunkers: the dark volcanic sand, jet black against the green fairways and blue sky, frames the holes in a way you find nowhere outside the Canaries and makes for striking photographs and a slightly different feel out of the trap. The three nines each have their own character, with the Links loop the most open and exposed and the North and South tighter and more wooded.

None of the loops is especially long, so the course rewards steady, accurate play over power, and the well placed bunkering and the breeze off the coast supply most of the defense. The greens are fair and the routing flows, which makes it an enjoyable, sociable round for a mixed ability group rather than a brutal test of nerve.

Its ace card is location. With Tenerife South airport just minutes away, it is the obvious round to bookend a trip, and the 27 holes mean you can play a relaxed extra nine in the afternoon. As the value anchor of a southern Tenerife week, it slots in around the bigger names with no fuss.
