The verdict

El Rompido sits on an unspoilt stretch of the Costa de la Luz at Cartaya, near the mouth of the Piedras river, and the South Course is where the resort started. Designed by Alvaro Arana and opened in 2003, it is the original of the two layouts, a par 72 that plays more open and more forgiving than its younger sibling to the north.

At about 6,168 yards it asks for placement rather than power, with wide corridors off many tees and the real defense waiting at the greens. It is the friendlier of the pair for a society day or a mixed handicap group, and with a green fee among the better value on the coast and an on site hotel for stay and play, it folds easily into a southwest Spain trip. The holes worth the trip

The South Course is built for enjoyment first. Arana laid it across gently rolling ground with broad fairways and longer sightlines than the tighter North, so the tee shot is rarely claustrophobic and the average golfer can swing freely without fearing the scrub on either side.

The interest lives nearer the hole. Greens are well bunkered and subtly contoured, and water comes into play on a handful of holes to make a careless approach expensive, so a tidy short game scores well here even when the driver is wayward. It rewards a sensible, position to position round rather than heroics.

That contrast with the more demanding North gives the resort genuine variety: open the week on the gentler South to find your rhythm, then take on the fuller test of the North. For a buddies trip or a couples golf break on the Costa de la Luz, the pairing and the value are the draw.

Where to stay nearby

The on site resort hotel makes stay and play the simplest option, with the marina village of El Rompido and the wide Atlantic beaches of the Huelva coast a short drive away. This is a calmer, more natural stretch of Andalusia than the Costa del Sol, known for its estuaries, seafood and unhurried pace.

For a fuller golf week, the South Course pairs naturally with the resort's North Course, the nearby 27 holes at Islantilla Golf Resort and the championship golf inland at Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, making Huelva and Seville an easy two center trip.
