Costa Ballena Ocean Golf Club
Costa Ballena is a Jose Maria Olazabal design opened in 1997 at Rota on the Costa de la Luz, a 27 hole championship layout in three nines plus a par 3 course. Long off the back tees and lined with olives, palms and figs, it has hosted European Tour Qualifying School and remains an honest value coastal round.

The verdict
Costa Ballena sits on the Atlantic shoulder of Cadiz at Rota, between Chipiona and El Puerto de Santa Maria, and it is one of the most complete golf complexes on the Costa de la Luz. Designed by Jose Maria Olazabal and opened in 1997, the championship course runs to 27 holes set out as three nines, Los Olivos, Las Palmeras and Los Ficus, each named for the trees that line it, so a visitor can play a different 18 hole combination across a stay.
The course is generous in width but long and well bunkered, a fair test that has been trusted with European Tour Qualifying School duty since the mid 2000s. Add the separate 9 hole par 3 layout for short game practice or a relaxed evening loop, and the value is among the better on the coast. The holes worth the trip
The three nines share a character: broad, gently moving fairways framed by their signature trees, with the difficulty held in the length and the bunkering rather than in claustrophobic corridors. From the back markers it stretches out enough to have served as a Qualifying School venue, but the forward tees keep it enjoyable for the average traveling group.
Olazabal built the greens to ask for a thoughtful approach, well defended by sand and shaped to reward the player who finds the correct level. Combine Los Olivos with Las Palmeras for one round and Las Palmeras with Los Ficus the next and the course never feels repeated across a golf week.
The par 3 course is more than a warm up. It is a genuine short game examination and a sociable way to close a day, which makes Costa Ballena a strong base for a buddies trip or a society group that wants volume of golf at sensible cost on the Costa de la Luz.

Where to stay nearby
Costa Ballena has its own resort apartments and hotels within walking distance of the first tee, and the wide beaches of Rota and Chipiona are minutes away. This is sherry country, with Jerez, El Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanlucar all close, so a golf trip here pairs easily with bodega visits and the seafood of the bay of Cadiz.
For a fuller golf week, Costa Ballena combines well with Novo Sancti Petri on the Chiclana coast and the two inland championship courses at Montecastillo Golf and Sherry Golf Jerez, making the province of Cadiz a varied and unhurried base.
