Dromoland Castle
Set on the storied estate of a five star castle hotel in County Clare, Dromoland Castle is a par 72 parkland of about 6,824 yards that winds past the lake, the woodland and the castle itself. Originally laid out in 1961 and redesigned by Ron Kirby with Irish amateur great JB Carr in 2003, it is the resort round that pairs naturally with the great links of the southwest.

The verdict
Dromoland is parkland golf with a sense of occasion. The course threads across an ancient estate of mature woodland, a serpentine lake and the turrets of one of Ireland's grandest castle hotels, and the experience leans as much on the setting as on the architecture. First laid out in 1961, it was comprehensively rebuilt in 2003 by Ron Kirby in partnership with the late JB Carr, one of Ireland's finest amateurs, who brought a player's eye to the strategy.
It will not be confused with the wild links an hour to the west, and it does not try to be. What Dromoland offers instead is a beautifully kept, walkable parkland with water in play on a string of holes, a worthy test from the back tees and a soft landing of luxury at the end of a hard links week. For travelling golfers basing themselves at the hotel, it is a round that earns its place on the itinerary.

The holes worth the trip
The round opens gently before the estate begins to show its hand, the mature parkland framing fairways that ask for position rather than raw power. The serpentine lake is the recurring hazard, brought into play on several holes where the safe line and the bold line diverge, and the greens are generous in size but subtly contoured.
The stretch around the water is the heart of the course, where the castle and the lake combine for the photograph everyone takes and the approach shots that decide the card. JB Carr's input shows in the way the holes reward a thoughtful route, and the closing run back toward the clubhouse and the castle gives the round a fitting finish.
It is a comfortable walk on well drained ground, playable for a wide range of handicaps from the forward tees yet with enough teeth from the championship markers to keep the better player honest. As a resort round wrapped around a luxury stay, Dromoland is hard to beat in the southwest.
