Golf de Deauville Saint-Gatien

Olivier Brizon laid out 27 holes here from 1988, on a plateau of woodland and open country between the smart resort coast of Deauville and the wide mouth of the Seine. Three nine hole loops combine into a championship par 72 of about 6,175 meters, the most rounded golf in the Pays d'Auge.

The verdict

Golf de Deauville Saint-Gatien is the most complete golf address on the Normandy coast, and the natural base for a buddies trip built around Deauville, Trouville and the racing and casino glamour of the Cote Fleurie. Olivier Brizon set out three contrasting nine hole loops, La Vallee, La Bergerie and La Chapelle, on a breezy plateau a few minutes inland from the beach, so a group can play 18 one day and a different 18 the next without ever leaving the property.

It is parkland rather than links, but the high ground gives it openness and movement, with views that reach to the estuary of the Seine on a clear day. La Vallee, the original signature nine, is the one to seek out, tumbling through trees and across folds in the land. The whole place is unfussy and pleasurable, the sort of course you finish wanting to play again, and it pairs neatly with the seaside courses of the Calvados coast for a wider Normandy golf trip.

The holes worth the trip

Saint-Gatien is built around three distinct nines, and the pleasure is in mixing them. La Vallee, the white course and the original, is the most dramatic, running through mature trees and down into folds of ground that give the round its rhythm. It is the loop a visiting group should make sure to play, with tee shots that must find the right side of the slope to leave a clear approach.

La Bergerie, the red course, climbs to the higher, more open plateau, flatter underfoot but more exposed to the wind that rolls in off the Channel and the estuary. It is the most technical of the three, asking for controlled iron play into greens that give little away. La Chapelle, the yellow loop and the newest, is shorter again but tight, a clever test where placement beats power.

Across all 27 holes the design favors the thinking golfer over the long hitter, and the variety of the three loops is the real draw: pick a combination to suit the wind and the mood, and no two rounds at Saint-Gatien feel quite the same. It is exactly the kind of flexible, repeatable golf a multi day trip is built on.
