Trevose Championship Course

Harry Colt golf above the Atlantic, at a price that still feels like a secret. Trevose has anchored the north Cornwall coast at Constantine Bay since 1925, its front nine threading the dunes within sight and sound of the sea. It is the rare course of real pedigree that remains a family holiday at heart, and the best loved golf trip in the West Country.

The verdict

Trevose is one of those courses that golfers fall for and return to year after year. Harry Colt laid out the Championship Course in 1925 on the headland at Constantine Bay, and the routing makes the most of a glorious site, with the opening holes running out toward the dunes and the surf before the back nine turns inland and climbs for the views. It is a par 71 that plays around 6,600 yards from the medal tees and stretches beyond 7,000 from the championship markers, never tricked up, always fair.

What sets it apart is the spirit of the place. Run by the same family for generations, Trevose is a proper resort club with lodges, cottages and apartments on site, a pool and tennis, and green fees that remain remarkably modest for a Colt course of this quality. For a summer family week or a buddies trip that wants surf, sand and serious golf, this is the West Country at its very best.

The holes worth the trip

The front nine is the postcard. From the early holes the course tips toward Constantine Bay, the dunes rise on either side and the Atlantic fills the horizon, and on a bright day with a breeze off the sea there are few more uplifting starts in English golf. The short holes here are exposed to the wind and demand a flighted iron that holds its line.

The middle of the round delivers the strongest sequence, with holes that ask you to drive into the right position and then commit to a second shot across the natural folds of the headland. The turf is firm and the ball runs, so the player who manages the bounce and the wind is rewarded over the one who simply hits it hard.

The back nine swings inland and uphill, trading the sea for sweeping views back across the coast, before the closing holes bring you home to the clubhouse. There is no single trophy hole that overshadows the rest; the pleasure of Trevose is the rhythm of the whole round and the sense, rare at this price, that you are playing a genuine architectural classic.
