Joondalup Resort
Robert Trent Jones Jr carved Joondalup out of harsh Perth bushland in 1985, three nines of quarry, lake and dune that twist through gum trees, rocky outcrops and a worked out limestone pit. It plays as a par 72 over a wild, theatrical landscape, and it is among the most dramatic resort golf in Western Australia, public and walkable when you book ahead.

The verdict
Robert Trent Jones Jr was handed a genuinely savage parcel of Western Australian bush for Joondalup in 1985, and he used every metre of it. The result is twenty seven holes split into three contrasting nines, the Quarry, the Lake and the Dune, each routed through a landscape of gum trees, granite, lakes and the cliffs of an old limestone quarry. Few resort courses anywhere feel this theatrical.
It is bold, occasionally brutal golf, the Quarry nine in particular asking you to fire across rocky chasms to greens perched on the far rim. Pair any two nines and you have a stout par 72 that has long sat among the better courses in the country. As a public resort with rooms on site, it is one of the easiest world class rounds in Australia to actually get on, which is no small thing.

The holes worth the trip
Joondalup rewards the player who respects the land. The fairways thread between bush and rock, and the three nines each have their own character, the Lake the gentlest, the Dune the hilliest, and the Quarry the one that earns the photographs.
The Quarry nine is the headline, its short holes asking carries over sheer limestone walls to greens set into and above the old pit, with the par 3s especially demanding nerve and an exact number. It is the kind of golf that pulls the camera out of the bag on nearly every tee.
Across all three loops the greens are generous in size but full of movement, and the bushland framing keeps the driver honest. Walk it if you are fit, but most visitors take the cart given the rugged terrain and the spread of the routing across the site.

Where to stay nearby
The simplest plan is to stay at Joondalup Resort itself, whose rooms sit beside the course and put the first tee a short stroll from breakfast. It makes an easy hub for a few days of golf in Perth and the northern suburbs.
Central Perth and the coast at Scarborough and Hillarys are a short drive away, with the wider choice of hotels, restaurants and the beaches and wine of the region. Joondalup pairs naturally with the city courses and a run south toward Margaret River for a fuller Western Australia golf trip.
