The verdict
Brookwater is the rare championship course designed by a major name that the public can simply book and play. Opened in 2002, it is the work of Greg Norman and his long time design partner Bob Harrison, set on rolling bushland in a residential estate southwest of Brisbane near Ipswich. Norman carved the fairways from dense native forest, leaving towering gum trees as a constant backdrop and bringing the area's natural waterways into the strategy, and the course quickly established itself among the best in Queensland.
The hallmark is the Shark's bold style of bunkering. Sweeping tee to fairway wastelands and large, sculpted greenside traps frame the holes and define the lines of play, asking the golfer to commit off the tee and think carefully about angles into the greens. It is a strong but fair par 72, demanding from the back markers and very playable from forward tees, and a recent relaunch by Greg Norman Golf Course Design has renewed the conditioning and presentation. For the travelling golfer it is a must on any Brisbane or Gold Coast itinerary.

The holes worth the trip
Brookwater is golf carved from the bush, and the corridors of native forest give it both beauty and bite. Norman routed the holes to use the natural fall of the land and the existing watercourses, so the round flows through changing scenery, from tight tree lined drives to open, bunker framed approaches. The premium off the tee is on commitment and shape, finding the fairway between the gums and setting up the best angle into greens that are well guarded and subtly contoured.
The signature waste bunkering is everywhere and everywhere meaningful. Long sandy wastelands run alongside fairways and cut across driving lines, while the greenside bunkering is deep and shapely, the kind that demands a confident recovery. Water comes into play through the lower holes, adding risk to several approaches and forcing real decisions on the more aggressive lines. It is strategic, photogenic golf that asks more questions the further back you play.
Conditioning has been a focus of the recent relaunch, and the course presents in fine order, with firm fairways and true greens that reward a well struck shot. For the visiting golfer the appeal is the combination of a marquee Norman design, a dramatic bushland setting and genuine public access, a championship experience without the barrier of a private membership, a short drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
