The Best Golf for a Society Trip in Wales

Wales is made for the golf society: a Ryder Cup resort, two royal links and a string of dramatic coastal courses, most clustered within an easy drive of the M4 and Cardiff. These are the seven best courses for a society or group trip, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to bring a group.

How we chose them

A society trip is a different brief from a bucket list pilgrimage. It wants courses that welcome groups, handle a shotgun or a block of tee times, lay on food and a bar afterward, and sit close enough together that a dozen golfers can play somewhere different each day from a single hotel. It also wants a spread of challenge, so the low handicappers are tested and everyone else still has fun. We judged these courses on the golf and on how well they work for a group in equal measure.

We weighed the quality of the design, the conditioning, the welcome for visiting societies, the practicality of group logistics and the value. Every fact here, from designers to opening years, was checked at the time of writing. The order is our editors' view, and the gap between the top few is small. If you want these built into a costed Wales society trip with the tee times, transfers and lodging arranged, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The seven best society courses in Wales

01

Celtic Manor Resort

Twenty Ten by Ross McMurray, 2007 · three courses · Newport

Our top pick for a society, and an obvious one. The 2010 Ryder Cup host has three eighteen hole courses, headed by Ross McMurray's Twenty Ten at over 7,400 yards, plus the Roman Road and the Montgomerie, a large hotel, several bars and restaurants and a dedicated golf events team. You can house, feed and play a big group entirely on site, which makes it the easiest and most complete society base in Wales.

02

Royal Porthcawl Golf Club

Championship links · Senior Open host · Porthcawl

The finest links in Wales and a regular Senior Open and Curtis Cup venue, where the sea is in view from every hole and the wind is the great defense. A serious, memorable test that visiting societies are welcomed to with advance booking, it is the course your better players will talk about for years. Pair it with Pyle and Kenfig just up the road for a links double.

03

The Vale Resort

Two courses · near Cardiff · group specialist

A short hop from Cardiff and the M4, The Vale is built for golf breaks, with two eighteen hole courses, the longer Wales National and the parkland Lake, a big hotel, a spa and a track record of hosting societies and golf groups. The golf is enjoyable rather than ferocious, and the all under one roof convenience makes it a smart, well priced base for a mixed ability group.

04

Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club

Links and dunes · Bridgend coast

A links gem next door to Royal Porthcawl, with a front nine over gentler ground and a back nine that climbs into big, rolling dunes for one of the best closing stretches in Welsh golf. Friendly to visiting groups, excellent value and a wonderful companion round to Porthcawl, it is a society favorite on the South Wales coast.

Add Pyle and Kenfig to a trip

05

Machynys Peninsula Golf Club

Nicklaus Design, 2005 · Llanelli

A modern Nicklaus Design links style course on the Loughor estuary near Llanelli, opened in 2005 with water in play, big greens and views across the Gower. It has hosted Ladies European Tour events, presents beautifully and welcomes groups, a contemporary contrast to the older links that rounds out a South West Wales itinerary nicely.

06

Nefyn and District Golf Club

Old Tom Morris origins · Llyn Peninsula

One of the most spectacular cliff top courses in Britain, on a narrow finger of land on the Llyn Peninsula with the sea on both sides and a famous pub, Ty Coch, reachable from the course. The golf is pure fun rather than a championship grind, and for a society after scenery and a story to tell it is unforgettable. A worthwhile journey north for the right group.

07

Royal St David's Golf Club

Championship links · Harlech

A classic links laid out beneath the walls of Harlech Castle with the peaks of Snowdonia behind, often called one of the toughest par 69s in the world. It is a beautiful, demanding and historic round that welcomes visiting groups, and it anchors a North Wales society leg alongside courses like Conwy and Aberdovey.

Wales society golf: common questions

What is the best golf course for a society trip in Wales?

Celtic Manor Resort is our top pick for a society trip, the 2010 Ryder Cup host with three eighteen hole courses, a large hotel, multiple bars and restaurants and a dedicated golf events team, which makes it the easiest place in Wales to bring a group. Royal Porthcawl and The Vale Resort are excellent alternatives.

Where should a golf society base itself in Wales?

Most societies base in South Wales, within easy reach of the M4 and Cardiff, where Celtic Manor, The Vale, Royal Porthcawl and Pyle and Kenfig are all close together. That cluster lets a group play a different course each day with short transfers and a single hotel base, which keeps logistics and cost simple.

When is the best time for a golf society trip to Wales?

May to September gives the best weather, the firmest turf and the longest daylight for golf in Wales, which suits a society itinerary of multiple rounds. Spring and early autumn are quieter and often better value, and the links courses can play beautifully on a calm shoulder season day.
