The Best Golf Courses in Alabama and the Gulf Coast

Alabama is the best value championship golf state in America, home to the vast Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and a Gulf Coast led by Jerry Pate's Kiva Dunes. Almost all of it is public and bookable, which makes a trip here a rare thing: world class courses, sugar white beaches and a green fee that leaves room in the budget. Here are the ten we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

Alabama golf has a defining feature that shapes any list: almost all of it is public. The state is anchored by the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, a collection of championship courses across eleven sites that was the largest golf construction project ever attempted, and by a Gulf Coast cluster around Gulf Shores and Mobile Bay where the best resort and daily fee courses sit within reach of the beach. We weighed two strands. The Trail comes first for sheer championship pedigree, led by Grand National near Auburn, Ross Bridge near Birmingham and Capitol Hill at Prattville. And the coast, led by Jerry Pate's Kiva Dunes and the inland gem of FarmLinks at Pursell Farms, gives the list its variety and its sense of place.

Every fact here, from designers to host events, was checked at the time of writing. The great strength of Alabama is that you can actually play all of it, so unlike many of our state lists this one is almost entirely bookable, with green fees a fraction of what comparable golf costs elsewhere. The verdicts and the order are ours, and reasonable people will reorder the top five. If you want any of these built into a costed Trail tour or a Gulf Coast week, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Kiva Dunes Golf Club

Jerry Pate · Gulf Shores · resort, public

The best course on the Alabama Gulf Coast and a fixture in the state's top tier. Designed by former US Open champion Jerry Pate on a stretch of natural white sand dunes and lakes near the water at Gulf Shores, Kiva Dunes plays as a genuine seaside layout, firm and breezy, with the dunes framing the fairways and a links character rare in this part of the country. It is fully bookable as a resort course, with a private beach and condos alongside, and it is the round every visiting golfer on the coast wants to play.

02

FarmLinks at Pursell Farms

Hurdzan and Fry, 2003 · Sylacauga · resort, public

Often the highest rated public course in the state and the heart of a 3,200 acre resort an hour south of Birmingham. Mike Hurdzan and Dana Fry opened FarmLinks in 2003 as a showcase layout, rolling through wooded hills, water and dramatic elevation change, and it has matured into a destination course paired with one of the most complete stay and play resorts in the South. Fully bookable, immaculately kept and a worthy number two, it is the inland counterpoint to the Gulf Coast golf.

03

Grand National, Lake Course

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail · Opelika, near Auburn · public

The crown jewel of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and consistently rated among the very best public courses in Alabama. The Lake Course at Grand National threads twelve holes along the shore of 600 acre Lake Saugahatchee near Auburn, with water in play throughout and the Trail's trademark scale and bold bunkering. It is championship golf at a public green fee, fully bookable, and the single best reason to make the Trail the spine of a trip. A second eighteen, the Links, is every bit as good.

04

Ross Bridge

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail · Hoover, near Birmingham · resort, public

The grandest of the Trail courses, carved into the terrain of Shannon Valley near Birmingham and stretching to an enormous 8,191 yards from the back tees, among the longest courses in the world. Ross Bridge plays down to a Renaissance resort hotel, with a waterfall cascading between the ninth and eighteenth greens and bagpipes at sunset, and for all its length it is playable and beautifully kept from the right tees. A flagship resort round on the Trail and fully bookable.

05

Capitol Hill, The Judge

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail · Prattville · public

Home to the Trail's most famous opening shot, the par 3 first on the Judge Course at Capitol Hill, which plays from a clifftop tee around 200 feet down to a green beside the Alabama River. The Judge is the boldest of three eighteens at Prattville, a dramatic, water framed test that has hosted professional events, and the whole 54 hole site is one of the great value golf days in the country. Fully bookable, and a must on any Trail tour.

06

Lakewood Golf Club, Grand Hotel

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail · Point Clear, Mobile Bay · resort, public

The historic golf of the Grand Hotel at Point Clear, a genteel resort on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay that has welcomed golfers for generations. Now part of the Robert Trent Jones Trail, the 36 holes at Lakewood, the Dogwood and Azalea courses, wind beneath moss draped live oaks beside the bay, with the storied resort and its long verandas alongside. It is the most atmospheric base on the coast, fully bookable, and the natural pairing with a Gulf Shores leg.

07

Magnolia Grove, Crossings

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail · Mobile · public

The Trail's southernmost site and its gateway to the Gulf Coast, a 54 hole complex in Mobile that has hosted LPGA Tour events. The Crossings and Falls courses are heavily wooded, big and demanding in the classic Trail manner, with a celebrated short course alongside, and they sit within easy reach of both Mobile Bay and the Gulf Shores beaches. Fully bookable championship golf at a public green fee, and an ideal first or last round on a coast trip.

08

Craft Farms, Cotton Creek

Arnold Palmer · Gulf Shores · resort, public

One of two Arnold Palmer designs at the Craft Farms resort in Gulf Shores, and a coast favourite. Cotton Creek is the pick of the pair, a mature, water and pine framed parkland layout that Palmer's company shaped through the coastal plain, polished and very playable, paired with the Cypress Bend course next door. Fully bookable and right in the heart of the Gulf Shores golf cluster, it is a reliable, enjoyable round to fill out a beach golf week.

09

The Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club

Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan · resort, public

A 27 hole layout set on a peninsula between the Gulf and the Bon Secour wildlife refuge near Gulf Shores, where the three nines, Marsh, Lakes and Cypress, wind through wetlands, lagoons and stands of pine alive with coastal wildlife. Scenic, varied and quietly challenging when the breeze picks up off the water, it is fully bookable and one of the better all round courses on the Alabama coast, a worthy inclusion on any Gulf Shores itinerary.

10

Grand National, Links Course

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail · Opelika, near Auburn · public

The second eighteen at Grand National and a course many rate the equal of its more famous sibling, the Lake. The Links also borrows the shore of Lake Saugahatchee but rolls through more open, undulating ground in a links inspired style, with the same bold scale and superb conditioning. Playing the Lake and the Links back to back is one of the best value days in American golf, fully bookable, and the strongest argument for basing a Trail trip around Auburn.
