The Best Golf Courses in Turkey

Almost all of Turkey's championship golf sits in one remarkable strip of pine forest at Belek, near Antalya on the Mediterranean coast. Within a half hour drive you can play a Peter Thomson heathland, a Colin Montgomerie resort course and a Nick Faldo design. Here are the ten courses we would build a Turkish golf trip around.

How we chose

How we ranked the best of Turkish golf

Our ranking puts the quality and pedigree of the design first, then condition, the championship record and the wider resort experience. Turkey's golf is young, almost all of it built since the 1990s, but the best of it is world class, and the Belek courses that have hosted the DP World Tour lead our list. The verdicts are ours; the design credits and tournament histories we cite are a matter of record.

Nearly every course worth the trip lies in the Belek and Antalya belt, a dense cluster of resort courses set among umbrella pines a short transfer from Antalya airport. That concentration is Turkey's great advantage: a single base puts a dozen championship eighteens within easy reach, which is why a Belek week remains one of the best value golf trips in the Mediterranean.

The ranking

The ten best golf courses in Turkey

From the floodlit heathland of Carya to the links experiment at Lykia, ranked with our verdicts and the reasons to play each one.

01

Carya Golf Club

Belek · Thomson Perrett & Lobb · heathland

Turkey's number one and the work of Thomson Perrett and Lobb, the practice founded by five time Open champion Peter Thomson. A heather and pine heathland that draws fair comparison with the great courses of southeast England, it was the first fully floodlit eighteen in Europe and has hosted the Turkish Airlines Open. The standout round in the country and the natural centrepiece of a Belek trip.

02

Montgomerie Maxx Royal

Belek · Colin Montgomerie · resort

Colin Montgomerie's Belek design is laid out as six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s, a clever balance that gives every round real variety. Immaculately conditioned and a multiple host of the Turkish Airlines Open, it is the most polished resort experience in Turkey and a worthy number two.

03

The National Golf Club

Belek · Feherty and Jones · parkland

Turkey's first championship course, opened in 1994 to a David Feherty and David Jones design, and an early host of the European Tour's Turkish Open. A mature, tree lined parkland that has aged into one of the most characterful and best conditioned rounds on the coast.

04

Antalya Golf Club, PGA Sultan

Belek · European Golf Design · parkland

The PGA Sultan course is the bigger and bolder of the two layouts at Antalya Golf Club, a European Golf Design test with water, generous bunkering and a strong closing stretch. A regular tournament venue and one of the sternest examinations in Belek.

05

Cornelia Golf Club, Prince

Belek · Nick Faldo · resort

Part of Nick Faldo's twenty seven hole design at Cornelia, the Prince nine combines with the Faldo and King loops to make a flexible championship course. Lush, dramatic and beautifully presented, it sits at the luxury end of the Belek resort scene.

06

Antalya Golf Club, Pasha

Belek · David Jones · parkland

The Pasha is the friendlier sibling to the PGA Sultan at Antalya Golf Club, a David Jones design that is shorter and more forgiving without losing its quality. An enjoyable, well kept round that suits a mixed ability group.

07

Gloria Golf Club, Old

Belek · Michel Gayon · parkland

The Old course at Gloria, a Michel Gayon design from 1997, was one of the courses that established Belek as a golf destination. Tight, tree lined and strategic, it remains a firm favourite and the pick of the three Gloria layouts.

08

Lykia Links Golf Club

Antalya · Perry Dye · links

Turkey's only true links, a Perry Dye design laid out on sandy ground by the sea well west of the main Belek cluster. Firm, breezy and a complete change of character from the parkland resorts, it is worth the detour for golfers who want something different.

09

Sueno Golf Club, Dunes

Belek · resort · par 72

The Dunes course at Sueno is a long, well bunkered resort layout that has featured in professional golf, the more testing of the venue's two eighteens. Reliable conditioning and a convenient on site hotel make it a popular Belek base.

10

Gloria Golf Club, New

Belek · Michel Gayon · parkland

The New course completes Michel Gayon's work at Gloria, a slightly more open and modern companion to the Old. Combined with the nine hole Verde it gives the resort plenty of variety and rounds out our Turkish ten.

Costs and access

Costs, access and the season

Turkish golf plays best from October to May, when the Mediterranean heat eases and the courses are in their prime; midsummer is hot but quiet and cheap. Almost everything is resort golf, so tee times are straightforward to book and most visitors play on a package that bundles hotel, transfers and several rounds.

Green fees are modest by western European standards, which is much of Belek's appeal, though the flagship courses such as Carya and Montgomerie Maxx Royal command a premium. The figures below are indicative high season rack rates; package golf is usually a good deal cheaper.
