The Best Golf Courses in the Loire Valley

The Loire Valley is chateau country, and its golf matches the setting: world ranked layouts hidden in the Sologne forest, parkland courses wrapped around moated chateaux, and a touring region of wine, food and history along France's great river. At the top sits Les Bordes, one of the finest courses in Europe. Here are the seven courses we rate most highly in the Loire Valley, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

The Loire Valley, the Centre-Val de Loire, holds one truly world class venue and a clutch of fine chateau parkland courses, and a good trip understands the difference. Les Bordes, deep in the Sologne forest, is a private estate with two of the best layouts on the continent and an entry of its own. The rest are public or hotel courses set among the chateaux and vineyards from Orléans down through Blois to Tours, the kind of polished, tree lined golf that pairs beautifully with a wine and history tour of the region.

We weighed course quality and design pedigree, the strength of the setting, the playability across a range of handicaps, and how each course fits a touring week. Les Bordes stands apart at the top; the chateau courses follow on character and access. Every detail was checked at the time of writing. The order and the verdicts are our editors' view, so reasonable people will reorder the list. If you want these built into a costed trip, see our guide to golf in the Loire Valley or our France golf holidays, and our concierge will do the rest.

The ranking

01

Les Bordes, Old Course

Sologne · Robert von Hagge · opened 1986 · top three in Europe for decades

One of the great courses of Europe, Robert von Hagge's Old Course carves a tree lined par 72 of just over 7,000 yards through the pine, oak and birch of the Sologne forest, threaded with a famous complex of lakes that swallow the timid shot. It has ranked among the top three courses on the continent for thirty years, a stern, beautiful and uncompromising test that is the reason serious golfers seek out the Loire. Access is through the private estate and its hotel rather than a public tee sheet. The finest round in the region by a distance.

02

Les Bordes, New Course

Sologne · Gil Hanse · opened 2021 · heathland style

The modern companion to the Old, unveiled in 2021 and designed by Gil Hanse, who took inspiration from the great heathland courses around London and Paris and from Pine Valley. It winds through the heather, pine and birch of the same Sologne estate, firmer and more strategic than its older sibling, and instantly took its place among the best new courses in Europe. Together the two give Les Bordes a 36 hole offering that few estates in the world can match. A worthy modern classic and reason enough to stay on the estate.

03

Golf du Chateau de Cheverny

Loir-et-Cher · Olivier Van der Vynckt · opened 1988 · par 71

The best of the public chateau courses, an Olivier Van der Vynckt design from 1988 laid out around the Rousselière pond on the wooded estate of the magnificent Château de Cheverny, fifteen minutes from Blois in the heart of chateau country. The par 71 runs through woods, meadow and water with the great house never far away, an enjoyable and scenic test that pairs perfectly with a day touring the chateaux. For visitors who cannot get on at Les Bordes, this is the round to build the trip around. Polished, accessible and beautifully set.

04

Golf de Touraine, Ballan-Mire

Indre-et-Loire · Michael Fenn · opened 1973

The oldest of the courses around Tours, a Michael Fenn design from 1973 set on the wooded estate of the Château de la Touche at Ballan-Miré, just south west of the city. It is a mature, classic parkland of tree lined fairways and small greens, a course that asks for placement over power and rewards local knowledge, with a handsome clubhouse and a settled members feel. Close to Tours and the western Loire chateaux, it anchors a southern base for the region. A traditional, well loved round in the garden of France.

05

Golf du Chateau des Sept Tours

Indre-et-Loire · opened 1993 · par 72 · chateau hotel

A stay and play around a fifteenth century chateau at Courcelles-de-Touraine, north west of Tours, where the par 72 opened in 1993 and wraps over level, forested land beside the great house, now a hotel. The golf is gentle and good natured rather than severe, which makes it an ideal base for a relaxed group or a couples trip, with the rooms, the restaurant and the course all on one estate. Pair it with Touraine and Cheverny for a chateau golf week. An easy, atmospheric round with a bed on site.

06

Golf d'Orleans-Donnery

Loiret · Robert Trent Jones Sr and Olivier Van der Vynckt · opened 1952 · par 71

The pick of the courses at the eastern, Orléans end of the valley, a historic layout that dates to 1952, with one nine credited to the great Robert Trent Jones Sr and the other to Olivier Van der Vynckt. The par 71 runs through woodland and around water near Donnery, a varied and pleasant test with a real pedigree given its designer, and a natural first or last round on a trip touring east to west down the river. Mature, varied and quietly distinguished. A fine base for the upper Loire.

07

Golf de Sully-sur-Loire

Loiret · 27 holes · between the Loire and the Sologne

A friendly 27 hole complex at the chateau town of Sully-sur-Loire, on the boundary between the river and the Sologne forest, offering three contrasting nines from open, links like ground to tighter, wooded holes. It is more a relaxed members and visitors course than a championship test, which makes it a good value, flexible stop for a touring group wanting plenty of golf without the pressure. Close to Orléans and the upper chateaux, it rounds out an eastern Loire itinerary. Sociable, varied and easy to enjoy.

Designers, opening years and access notes verified June 2026 from the clubs and leading databases; visitor access, green fees and tee times vary by season, and Les Bordes is a private estate. Always confirm visitor access and fees directly before booking. Check tee time availability.

Loire Valley golf questions

What is the best golf course in the Loire Valley?

Les Bordes is comfortably the best golf in the Loire Valley and one of the finest in Europe. The Robert von Hagge designed Old Course, opened in 1986, has ranked among the top courses on the continent for decades, and the 2021 Gil Hanse New Course gives the private estate in the Sologne forest two world class layouts. Beyond Les Bordes, Cheverny and Touraine lead the public chateau courses. Always confirm visitor access and fees directly before booking.

Can you play Les Bordes?

Les Bordes is a private members club with an estate hotel, and access is generally limited to members, their guests, and guests staying on the estate, rather than casual public green fees. The chateau courses of the wider Loire Valley, such as Cheverny, Touraine and the Chateau des Sept Tours, are open to visitors and make the region a rewarding golf trip in their own right. Always confirm access arrangements directly before booking.

When is the best time to play golf in the Loire Valley?

May to October is the prime window, with warm, settled weather and the parkland and forest courses in peak condition, and it dovetails with the best season for touring the chateaux and the vineyards. Spring and early autumn are quieter and often lovely. Summer can be warm inland, so plan earlier tee times. Always confirm conditions before booking.
