The Best Golf Courses on the French Riviera

The Cote d'Azur pairs glamour with golf as well as anywhere in Europe: over 300 days of sun, more than twenty courses between Monaco and Saint-Tropez, and a backdrop of mountains, pine and sea. From a Four Seasons resort in the hills to a course on a mountaintop above Monte-Carlo, here are the eight we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each.

How we chose them

The Riviera has two golf worlds. The hills behind Cannes and Grasse hold the modern championship resorts and the great members clubs, while the coast and the inland Var add history and variety, from a course laid out in the 1890s to a mountaintop layout with views across three countries. A complete top eight honours both, and rewards conditioning, design pedigree and the sense of place that makes golf here feel like nowhere else.

Every fact here, from designers and opening years to host events, was checked at the time of writing against the clubs and recognized sources. The verdicts and the order are our editors' view rather than any single published list, so reasonable people will reorder the top five, particularly between Terre Blanche and Royal Mougins. Several of these are premium, and a couple are private. If you want any of them built into a costed trip with the lodging and the routing planned around the tee times, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Terre Blanche, Le Chateau

Dave Thomas · Fayence · resort

The best golf on the Riviera and a regular in France's top ten. Dave Thomas laid out two courses here, and Le Chateau is the championship test, rolling through the wooded hills above Fayence with water, elevation and the finest conditioning in the region. It sits within a Four Seasons resort with a spa and Michelin dining, so the whole trip can live on the estate. Polished, scenic and the benchmark for the area.

02

Royal Mougins Golf Club

Robert von Hagge, 1993 · Mougins

One of the most prestigious courses on the coast, a tight, dramatic Robert von Hagge design from 1993 tumbling through a valley near the village of Mougins, with water, bold bunkering and hilly terrain giving no respite over its par 71. It has hosted professional events and pairs a serious test with a smart clubhouse, spa and hotel. Central to the Cannes and Mougins cluster, and the strongest rival to Terre Blanche.

03

Monte-Carlo Golf Club

Willie Park Jr · Mont Agel

Golf with a view like no other. Perched at around 900 metres on Mont Agel above Monaco, this Willie Park Jr layout looks out across the Mediterranean and three countries, the cool mountain air a relief from the coast below. It is a historic, characterful course rather than a long modern test, and a round here is as much about the setting and the sense of occasion as the golf. A bucket list day above Monte-Carlo.

04

Cannes-Mougins Golf Country Club

Founded 1923 · Mougins

One of the oldest and most distinguished golf estates on the Riviera, founded in 1923 and long a host of the Cannes Open on the European Tour. The fairways and the famously fast greens are immaculate, the parkland setting mature and elegant, and the clubhouse carries the air of a great old club. A piece of Riviera golf history right at the heart of the Mougins cluster, and a connoisseur's round.

05

Golf Old Course Cannes-Mandelieu

1891 · Mandelieu-la-Napoule

The oldest course on the Riviera and one of the oldest in France, founded in 1891 by Grand Duke Michael of Russia and laid out among towering parasol pines beside the Siagne river. It is short and quirky rather than long, with a river crossed by a small ferry and a railway negotiated by bridge, a charming throwback that every visiting golfer should experience. History, atmosphere and a gentle, enjoyable round by the sea at Mandelieu.

06

Terre Blanche, Le Riou

Dave Thomas · Fayence · resort

The second course at Terre Blanche, the more playable companion to Le Chateau, but a fine championship layout in its own right, weaving through the same beautiful Provencal hills with water and dramatic green sites. For a trip based at the resort it gives a second day of golf to the same exacting standard without leaving the estate, and it is a touch friendlier for the mid handicapper. Two top class courses in one luxurious base.

07

Golf de Saint-Endreol

La Motte · inland Var

A spectacular and challenging course in the wild hills of the Var at La Motte, inland from the coast, with dramatic elevation changes, water and a famous run of holes through the rock. It is scenic, demanding and great value next to the coastal flagships, with a hotel and spa on site for a quieter, nature led base. A rewarding change of pace for golfers who want drama and seclusion away from the Riviera crowds.

Plan a Var golf trip

08

Golf de Barbaroux

Pete and PB Dye · Brignoles

A rare Pete Dye design in the south of France, set in the rolling country near Brignoles in the Var, with the strategic bunkering, water and shaping that mark the architect's work. It is a bold, American style championship test, very different in character from the older Riviera courses, and well worth the drive inland for keen golfers extending a coastal trip. Distinctive, demanding and a fine addition to a Riviera and Provence itinerary.

French Riviera golf questions

What is the best golf course on the French Riviera?

Terre Blanche, and specifically its Le Chateau course, is our pick and is regularly ranked the best on the Riviera and among the top ten in France. The Dave Thomas design sits within a Four Seasons resort in the hills near Fayence, with two championship courses, immaculate conditioning and the best facilities in the region. Royal Mougins near Cannes is the strongest alternative.

When is the best time to play golf on the French Riviera?

The Cote d'Azur is a year round golf destination with over 300 days of sunshine. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots, warm and settled with the courses in fine order, while winter is mild and popular with traveling golfers escaping northern Europe. High summer is hot and busy with holidaymakers, so mornings are best then.

How much are green fees on the French Riviera?

The flagship courses are premium. Royal Mougins, for example, runs at an indicative 95 to 165 euros depending on season for 2026, and Terre Blanche and Monte-Carlo are at the top end too, while the older and inland courses are more moderate. Rates move with the season, so always confirm directly before booking.

Where should I base a golf trip on the French Riviera?

The Cannes, Mougins and Valbonne area is the natural hub, central to Royal Mougins, Cannes-Mougins, Terre Blanche and the Old Course, with the coast and the airport at Nice close by. A trip can stretch east to Monte-Carlo and inland to Saint-Endreol and Barbaroux. Our concierge plans the routing and the base around your tee times.
