The Best Golf Courses in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is one of Asia's great city-golf destinations: a ring of tournament-grade courses within easy reach of the towers, lush, well-watered and playable all year. These are the seven we would tee it up on, ranked with our verdicts, from the DP World Tour stage at TPC Kuala Lumpur to the rainforest at Templer Park.

How we chose

Kuala Lumpur packs a remarkable amount of good golf into a short drive of the city, so our ranking rewards the courses that justify a visitor's time and green fee: design quality and conditioning first, then a real sense of occasion, championship pedigree where it exists, and the practicalities of getting on as a visitor. We favoured courses that give a travelling golfer a memorable round and a story to take home, not simply a tee within the city limits.

All seven sit in and around the capital and the neighbouring Klang Valley, most within forty minutes of central Kuala Lumpur. They share the tropical character of Malaysian golf, generous, beautifully maintained and humid, with caddies and buggies the norm, and afternoon thunderstorms a regular part of the day. The verdicts are ours; the designers and tournament histories we cite are a matter of record.

The seven best courses in Kuala Lumpur

01

TPC Kuala Lumpur, West Course

Bukit Kiara · DP World Tour host · par 72

The number one course in Malaysia and the home of the Maybank Championship, the redesigned West Course at the former Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club sits on a hilltop at Bukit Kiara with the city skyline beyond. A polished, demanding championship layout backed by a lavish clubhouse, it is the round to build a KL golf trip around. Access is restricted as a private club, so plan ahead.

02

Saujana, Palm Course

Ronald Fream · Subang · par 72

The connoisseur's pick, a Ronald Fream design near Subang long nicknamed The Cobra for its bite, with tight, tree-lined fairways, devilish par 3s and small, fierce greens. A nine-time Malaysian Open host, it is the toughest serious test in the city and a genuine examination of every club in the bag. Pair it with its gentler sister, the Bunga Raya, for a contrasting two-round day.

03

The Mines Resort

Robert Trent Jones Jr · Seri Kembangan · par 71

A Robert Trent Jones Jr design built on a former open-cast tin mine, with a huge lake dominating the property and water in play across the closing holes. A 1999 World Cup host with a resort and convention centre alongside, it is dramatic, photogenic and a reliable big-occasion round just south of the city. The most distinctive setting in Kuala Lumpur golf.

04

Kota Permai

Shah Alam, Klang Valley · par 72

A modern championship course in Shah Alam that has hosted professional and elite amateur events, with water threaded through wide, well-bunkered fairways and excellent conditioning. Strong, fair and visitor-friendly, with a smart clubhouse, it is one of the most enjoyable and accessible serious rounds in the Klang Valley. A safe, rewarding choice for travelling golfers.

05

Tropicana

Petaling Jaya · parkland · 36 holes

A handsome resort-style club in Petaling Jaya with two well-kept eighteens, mature landscaping, lakes and a grand clubhouse, set close to the city in the heart of the Klang Valley. Generous enough to enjoy for a mixed group yet with plenty of interest, and easy to combine into a flexible day, it is a comfortable, convenient round near central KL. Polished and accessible.

06

Glenmarie, Garden Course

Shah Alam · parkland · 36 holes

A long-established club between KL and the airport with two contrasting courses, the more open and forgiving Garden Course being the pick for most visitors. Mature, well run and conveniently placed for a round on the way in or out of the country, it is a dependable, easygoing parkland that suits a relaxed game. The handy choice near the airport corridor.

07

Templer Park

Rawang · rainforest · par 72

The wild card, a course carved into dense rainforest and limestone hills north of the city, where the jungle closes in and monkeys and hornbills are regular company. A genuine change of scene from the manicured city clubs, demanding accuracy off the tee and rewarding the round with real tropical drama, it is worth the slightly longer drive for golfers chasing something different. Atmospheric and adventurous.

A loose map: TPC Kuala Lumpur sits at Bukit Kiara close to the city centre; Saujana, Kota Permai, Tropicana and Glenmarie cluster across the Klang Valley toward Subang, Shah Alam and the airport; The Mines is just south at Seri Kembangan, and Templer Park lies north at Rawang.
